Who needs a licence
The NSW EPA says anyone who uses pesticides for pest management for a fee or reward must hold a pest management technician licence. That covers general pest treatments such as cockroaches, spiders, ants and rodents. Licences are issued to individual technicians, not businesses, and run for 1 or 5 years.
Termites and timber pests: a separate licence
The EPA has phased in a timber pest management technician licence for termite and other timber pest treatments. A technician whose licence was first issued or renewed after 17 December 2021 needs this licence to carry out timber pest management work.
A timber pest inspection that doesn't involve applying pesticide doesn't need an EPA licence. If you're booking an inspection only, ask about the inspector's qualifications and insurance, and which Australian Standard the report follows (see what to expect from a termite inspection).
How to check a technician's licence
- Ask for the technician's name and licence number, and ask to see their photo licence card.
- Look them up on the EPA's public register of licences.
- For termite work, check the licence covers timber pest management.
- If you have questions, call the EPA's Environment Line on 131 555.
Questions to ask before you book
- What licence (and endorsement or authorisation) do you hold for this job, and can I see it?
- Are you insured for public liability and professional indemnity?
- Can I have a written quote that includes your licence details and ABN?
- Which chemicals will you use, why, and how will they be applied?
- Do we need to leave, close windows or move pets, and when can we go back in?
- Will I get a written report or treatment record afterwards?
How this referral service fits in
Tamworth Pest Quotes is a referral service run by Raf Web Studio. We don't hold a pest management licence because we don't carry out pest control. We only pass your request to an operator who holds the licence your job needs, and that operator is responsible for the work. Please still check their licence yourself.
